The San Roman Ranch is in Starr County, just south of the Jim Hogg County line. (It fronts on State Highway 649 across from the “Tecomate Ranch” at the old town of San Roman, Texas.) The north-northwest side has approximately 2.5 miles of caliche county road.WATER: The ranch is watered by one well with submersible pump and approximately four miles of waterline bisecting the property. There are four troughs, three of which are shallow, specially designed for wildlife.
VEGETATION: The ranch is predominantly buffle grass and native grass in the lower portions with typical brush such as granjeno, coma, guayacan, ebony, blackbrush, whitebrush, mesquite, and cenizo on the “caliche” areas along ridges. The buffle grass fields have scattered mesquite and prickly pear as well as huisache growing in the “ramaderos” and low country. The property has been enrolled in the CRP program for over 15 years so the habitat is returning to its natural state.
SOILS: The area is renowned for its high quality soils and was utilized as “dry cropland” in the last century. There is a large amount of Brennan Loam, some McAllen and Delmita as well as Copita soils. The neighboring “Tecomate” and “El Cazador” Ranches have had outstanding success farming food plots for the whitetail deer. Each year these ranches produce world-class trophies and with time and management, this ranch will do the same.
HUNTING: A wildlife management program was started in June of 2003 by enclosing the ranch with an eight-foot fence, and conducting census work, habitat work, food plots, and supplemental feeding. In March of 2004, the ranch received 35 does from a very well known and respected ranch in Starr County to further increase and improve the genetics on the property. The quail production has been better than average the last two years; and with the implementation of the quail management plan in early 2004, the numbers will certainly increase.
CRP FACTS:The property has 3,449.1 acres currently enrolled in the government’s CRP Program. This is in the form of two contracts: one expires September 30, 2007 and the other on September 30, 2008. The aggregate amount of these two contracts is $149,500 annually. The current owner receives 95% of the contract lease payments per the lease agreement.
GENERAL: It is rare to find a ranch of this size with a historical “crop base” recognized by the USDA in big deer country with such substantial income. The ranch has nice elevation changes with a ridge through the property that offers a 125’ change in elevation. From this high point you can overlook 70% of the ranch and view the mountains in Mexico on a clear day. The ranch is very clean, as there is no current mineral production on the ranch. There is one gas well that is “shut in” and one natural gas pipeline across the ranch. There are no other easements across the property.
